Funchal by Sea: Sunset, Dolphins & Ocean Dips

On our first full day, we embarked on a catamaran cruise that delivered a breathtaking sunset and playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat. Some guests even jumped into the ocean as the sun dipped below the horizon. The water was a bit chilly for me, but to each their own!

A Taste of Madeira: Food, Wine & Culture

Funchal Food Scene

One of the most memorable experiences was the Madeira Food, Wine & Cultural Tour in Funchal, guided by the wonderful Ana. The food was outstanding, the wines offered a bouquet of rich aromas and flavors, and the cultural insights were deeply immersive.

Have a food, wine, and culturally unique experience in the city. On this exceptional cultural and gustatory experience, you will be taken off the beaten track to sample excellent traditional food from Madeira while sipping a glass of Madeira wine or a cup of Portuguese tea. The tour begins in the charming historic center, led by a qualified tour guide with extensive experience. Our guide, Ana, explained the historical and cultural details of the city, as well as the traditions behind each dish, which will surely enrich the tour. The 4-hour tour included several stops with a visit to the market, from an artisanal chocolate tasting to the famous local custard tarts, and the choices of delicious treats will be enough to satisfy anyone’s cravings. The tour ensured that it accommodated the clients' needs from gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian. Each shop customized its menu to ensure that everyone had something to eat.

The tour helped us to appreciate Madeira’s food scene truly.

After the tour, we appreciated Funchal's food scene; it is a dream. We ate fresh sushi, a mouthwatering beef Madeira steak, exquisite seafood, and even a crispy fried black eel that was surprisingly delicious. Every meal was a celebration of flavor and local tradition.

Gelato Galore

Too Many to Count

The number of Gelato shops throughout the island was tremendous, so we decided to sample as many as we possibly could. Each night was a different flavor for each of us.

Walking, Hiking & Exploring the Island

Hiking Above and Below the Clouds

We walked over 50 miles in 7 days, exploring both the east and west coasts of Madeira. One hike took us above 1,818 meters, where we stood below the clouds, and then above them. The views from the cliffs were surreal. Another trip was to the third highest cliff in Europe and a glass floor to look through.

Our guide Renato, born in Madeira and raised in South Africa, shared fascinating stories about the island’s history and his family’s journey. His passion added depth to every step.

Beer, Wine, Rum Poncha

World-renowned Madeira Wine & Poncha

Nestled in the heart of the Atlantic, the island of Madeira has been crafting one of the world’s most resilient and storied wines for over five centuries. Madeira Wine isn’t just a drink—it’s a voyage through time.

The story begins in the 15th century, during the Age of Exploration, when Madeira became a vital port of call for ships bound for the East Indies and the New World. To preserve wine on these long journeys, local vintners began fortifying it with grape spirits. But something magical happened: the intense heat and motion of the sea transformed the wine, deepening its flavor and complexity. When unsold barrels returned to the island, they were found to be even better than when they left.

From this serendipitous discovery, a tradition was born. Madeira’s winemakers began intentionally aging their wines with heat—a process known as “estufagem”—or slowly in sun-warmed cellars using the “canteiro” method. The result? A wine that can survive decades, even centuries, and still taste divine after opening.

Madeira comes in styles ranging from dry and nutty to rich and sweet, often made from noble grape varieties like Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malvasia. It’s a wine that’s been toasted by presidents, poets, and pirates alike. Thomas Jefferson was known to serve it at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and it’s rumored to have been a favorite of Shakespeare’s Falstaff.

Today, sipping Madeira is like tasting history. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or paired with dessert, it’s a luxurious reminder of the island’s legacy a place where nature, tradition, and a touch of adventure converge in every glass.

If Madeira Wine is the island’s soul, then Poncha is its heartbeat—bold, bright, and unapologetically local.

This traditional drink traces its roots to the 16th century, when Portuguese sailors adapted an Indian concoction called “panch” (meaning five ingredients) into something uniquely Madeiran. The result? A potent blend of sugarcane rum (aguardente de cana), fresh citrus juice, and local honey, mixed with a wooden muddler called a mexelote—or cheekily, a caralhinho.

Originally favored by fishermen in Câmara de Lobos to ward off colds and warm the soul before heading out to sea, Poncha has evolved into a cultural icon. Today, it’s served in cozy taverns and upscale bars alike, with modern twists featuring passion fruit, tangerine, or even strawberry and lime.

One sip, and you’re not just tasting a drink—you’re tasting Madeira’s history, resilience, and zest for life.

 Culture, Art & History

Which Madeira Tour is Right for You?

No European trip is complete without visiting exquisite churches, museums, and theaters. Madeira is rich in music and art, and we even witnessed the arrival of the Portuguese Navy in port.

A highlight was the Fort of São Tiago, a striking 17th-century structure perched above the seafront in Funchal’s historic Zona Velha (Old Town).

Choose your perfect pace — from immersive, activity-packed adventures for outdoor enthusiasts, and cable car ride paired with scenic tours, to relaxed cultural journeys filled with food, history, and hospitality. No matter your travel style, these expertly guided tours bring Madeira's beauty to life in ways that are both unforgettable and uniquely you.
